I don't know if I really know how to write kids. I wasn't very social in my early years, and I don't have very clear memories of them. I don't spend much time with kids either. Olwynne is almost ten. I don't have any specific things that I do to write her as her age, I just try to write her as herself.

The concept for her character came from a couple of places. In one later edit of the book, there was a mention of a "small cousin who could run fast." I wanted an example of a more average talent to compare to the twins' powers. If I hadn't set out to make a funny comic out of the thing, Olwynne probably never would have been more than that. The second factor was the pasted-together name "Icklerin." It came from my fascination with British slang in the Harry Potter books, and my inability to remember the name of the character "Rin" from InuYasha. She was very small and cute and I wanted to remember her name, so I called her Icklerin. In some very early notes for the comic, this was also the name of the character who would later become Olwynne.

Her youth was a factor in giving her the enthusiasm for simple things that she has, but this is a quality of my own, and also something shared, to some extent, by all the sun elves. I especially like how it comes out in Syblai when the cousins are together.

The buffer is still growing, if I don't count that one comic I have to rewrite and lay out in Chapter One. Besides the one, I am done the first chapter and the second is off to a nice start. I draw such pretty pictures!
