I just read through Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series - four books in the last three days. It hasn't really helped with comic productivity. It has made me think about the fantasy novel I'm working on, since the first 1.5 books bear a striking resemblance to events in the first of three sections in our novel.
To be fair, it's pretty much Romeo and Juliet with a smidge of Buffy. It's not like the larger elements of the story are terribly original. There are just so many details, phrases and conversations that are so similar I go "didn't I write it that way?" It's really well executed, and I enjoyed it. I'm just kind of annoyed she got to the approach before I did - and/or is a much faster writer than I am. My two characters have been developing for maybe six years.
I've known that I needed to do some major editing in that section anyway, but this kind of gives me a place to move away from - how do I distinguish my characters from Edward and Bella? It seems manageable. The similar phrases I keep noticing seem like a bigger issue.
Yeah, it's a nice little break from comic work. I'll get back to it soon, I promise.
