The type of art I’m using here is relatively similar to that in my first comic and some of my other projects. There are a few new things I’m doing, though:
My first comic was done in regular old ballpoint. I wanted to work with a more professional medium for this project, but in these first four comics I am still learning to use my fineliner confidently, so the writing in the bubbles is still ballpoint. I don’t even start to use a felt-tip pen for the wider lines until page 13.
Yes, I have a large comic buffer. I need it there so I can make sure my rewriting goes smoothly and I can fiddle around with the art if it needs it. This brings us to difference #2: I am actually making an attempt to learn how to color my comics.
These first four were not intended to be colored when I drew them; they have some ballpoint sketches in the background, which took a while to figure out how to color, which explains some of their awkwardness. Also, I’m experimenting a lot with different ways to color the backgrounds, because I want to learn the stuff, but the characters should look consistent. I think I'm learning, but for now the style is decidedly scattered. Come back in a few months and see what I've come up with! I'm excited to see.
